In the short story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst, pride is a seed that bears two vines Life and Death, good and bad. This is about these two boys and this brother is embarrassed of his little brother because he was crippled. Nobody thought Doodle was going to live but aunt Nicey thought he would. He was crippled until he was like 5 until his brother helped him walk. Brother’s pride gets in the way of Doodle because he is embarrassed of him.
For example brother says “at times I was mean to Doodle.” This shows that brother is mean just because Doodle is disabled. Brother has to carry Doodle in a cart and runs around with him when he knows he is not supposed to run around with poor little Doodle. This also shows that brother is uncomfortable of his brother and his life. Then brother asks Doodle “do you want to be different from everybody else when you start school.” For this reason brother said this was that he was humiliated by his brother and wants him to learn how to walk. It’s like if you have a little brother and you were embarrassed of him you wouldn’t want to be around him and be near him with you friends.
In the same way brother says “Doodle don’t you want to learn how to walk.” Then Doodle says but I can’t and brother says I will help you learn how to walk. He helps him for his pride and for him to be proud of him instead of being embarrassed of him. Later on Doodle learned how to walk and then “I helped Doodle up, and he was standing alone I let them see.” He started to cry and his parents ask him why he is crying but he didn’t tell them why he was. What they didn’t know is that brother did this for him not just for his brother. For this reason brother is a doughtful person who only cares about himself.
Most important brother says “the knowledge that my plans had came to naught was bitter, and that streak of cruelty within me awakened.” Therefore this is when brother ran away from Doodle and left him behind in the rain. This shows that brother a senseless boy who doesn’t care for his little brother. After he ran out of breath he went back to brother and found out that “he had been bleeding from the mouth, and his neck and the front of his shirt were stained a brilliant red.” As a result because of brother’s careless mistake leaving Doodle behind which killed Doodle some way. Because brother was with Doodle and he died brother probably thinks it’s his fault for doodle’s death.
In conclusion, brother is a careless big brother who leaves Doodle alone and dies. By this action Doodle’s life is no more for his brother leaving him because of his pride of being embarrassed of him. I think that brothers pride shouldn’t have interfered with Doodle just because he was different from other people and maybe Doodle may have had a stronger chance of living if brother did this for Doodle and not just for himself.
